Optimizing Latency of the HTTP Protocol

چکیده

The WorldWide Web (WWW) hypertext system uses TCP/IP connections for network-transparent access to hypertext documents. Documents often contain several inlined images which have to be transferred as individual documents from the server to the client. For each transfer a separate TCP/IP connection has to be established. A significant amount of the total response time is caused by the latency due to the opening procedure of a TCP/IP connection. This paper presents a small extension of the HTTP protocol used by WWW servers and clients. The extension allows the re-use of established connections and, thus, reduces laten-cy. At the same time, the extension is transparent to servers and clients using the standard HTTP protocol.

WebExpress: A Client/Intercept Based System for Optimizing Web Browsing in a Wireless Environment

This paper describes an application model and software technology that makes it possible to run World Wide Web applications in wide area wireless networks. Web technology in conjunction with today’s mobile devices (e.g., laptops, notebooks, personal digital assistants) and the emerging wireless technologies (e.g., digital cellular, packet radio, CDPD) offer the potential for unprecedented acces...

HTTPEP: a HTTP Performance Enhancing Proxy for Satellite Systems

Broadband satellites enable Internet access for remote communities and niche markets such as ships and airplanes. However, their inherent characteristics, such as long delays and limited resources, significantly degrade the enduser’s web browsing quality-of-experience. In this paper, we propose a novel HTTP Performance Enhancing Proxy (PEP) that accelerates web-browsing and improves the utiliza...

Analysis of HTTP / 1 . 1 Performance on

We compare the performance of HTTP/1.0 and 1.1 on a high latency, low bandwidth wireless network. HTTP/1.0 is known to have low throughput and consume excessive network and server resources on today's graphics-intensive web pages. A high latency, low bandwidth network only magniies these problems. HTTP/1.1 was developed to remedy these problems. We show that on a Ricochet wireless network, HTTP...
